Seattle Mariners player Cal Raleigh defeated track and field in his major league leads 48 and 49 Sunday, setting a single-season record for receivers and scorting a total score with the Kansas City Royals in 2021 with Salvador Perez.
Raleigh’s record home run also marked his ninth multi-running race of the season, through Mickey Mantle (eight games for the New York Yankees in 1961) in a season in major league history where most multi-running races were in most multi-running races. The entire record is more than 11 races in a season.
From the right, Raleigh beat left-handed track and fielder Jacob Lopez in the first inning to tie Perez 2-0. According to STATCAST, Rowley ran a fastball from Lopez’s midfield and sent it to 448 feet. It is regarded as Raleigh’s longest home run in his career as a right-handed batsman.
In the second inning, Raleigh drilled a change from 412 feet from Lopez. In this year’s game, Raleigh’s long balls this season were 39 and 40. He had nine as a designated batsman. Perez hit 15 home runs as DH in 2021, hitting 33 on the Catchers.
In one season, only four other players in major league history have hit at least 40 home runs in one season: Johnny Bench (twice), Roy Campanella, Todd Hundley and Mike Piazza (twice). The bench, Campanella and the Plaza are Hall of Fame.
Raleigh launched 27 home runs in 2022, then created 30 home runs in 2023 and 34 home runs last season. If he continues at his current pace, Raleigh could be the first American League catcher to lead the majors directly in home runs.
Raleigh is 28-year-old first All-Star When he wins the All-Star Home Run Derby In July, the contract was signed for only six years, with a $105 million extension, only four months. He became the first sought-after and first catcher to win the championship. He is the second player to catch the crown after three-time champion Ken Griffey Jr.
With 31 games in the regular season, Raleigh also had an excellent chance to score a franchise record of 56 home runs in a season with Griffey.
Raleigh’s home run gave him 104 RBIs this season. He is the first receiver to 100 consecutive RBI seasons since Piazza (1996-2000), and the first American League backstage to complete the feat since Thurman Munson (1975-77).
