Platner’s brand of populist politics was developed to some extent out of his military experience. After graduating from high school, he enlisted in the Marine Corps and deployed three times to Iraq. When he returned home, he went to George Washington University under the GI bill and then decided to enlist with the Army National Guard again. He was deployed to Afghanistan.
