Takar Smith, 45, and Oscar Sanchez, 35, were shot dead by Los Angeles police in the first few days of 2023.
Dr. Melina Abdullah is combined with the Los Angeles chapter of Black Lives with Patrisse Cullors.
“When we first heard about Keenan Anderson, we were killed by a third policeman [in 2023]and then, when Patrisse reached out and said, “That’s my cousin’, we were completely abandoned,” Abdullah said. “This makes it more personal. It reminds us of how often the situation is and how far it can hit.”
Anderson lives in Washington, D.C., where he teaches 10th grade English at the Digital Pioneers Academy. According to a statement written on the school’s website by the college’s founder Madea Ashton, he visited his family during the winter break.
“Our community is grieving,” Ashton explain. “But we are also angry. Angry, again, well-known, loved and respected members of our community are no longer with us. Angry another talented, beautiful black soul too early.”
Mayor Karen Bass released statement On Wednesday, she expressed her sympathy for her family and expressed her concerns about the video. “The need for emergency change is obvious,” Bass wrote. “We must reduce the use of overall force, and I absolutely have no tolerance for excessive force.”
Abdullah called on police chief Michel Moore to resign. “We need to fight for justice in the name of Keenan Anderson,” Abdullah said.
