Hurricane Irene has brought life-threatening RIP current to the U.S. East Coast, soaking a portion of the Atlantic coastline, including the outer coastline of North Carolina. Although the hurricane is not expected to make landfall, the impact is felt along the beach. The National Hurricane Center noted that Erin is still a “big and growing hurricane” with a maximum sustained air volume of about 105mph (265km/h).
