But for now, Lukas has received good scholarships outside the university and enjoyed high rents outside the state. “The general community is a bit shrinking, and over time, I think that will get smaller after this,” he said.
Transgender people across the state told BuzzFeed News that introducing dozens of targeted education, forcing trans youth in schools and criminalizing doctors who provide gender-affirming care has harmed the community. Many are rethinking their long-term plans to stay in Oklahoma. While lawmakers have backed off an attempt to increase the age of access to gender-affirming care, this makes a point, they say: The rights of transgender people of any age in the state are under attack.
In Oklahoma City, Nile Glover, a 30-year-old trans woman, has made the difficult decision to escape with her partner Violet this month. Glover said that when she learned about SB 129, it felt like a warning sign. After introducing the bill last month, she started crowdfunding to pay for moving fees and went to Colorado with her partner to find an apartment.
“They are obviously especially here. We don’t want to persevere to wait for something to paste and live in whatever hell is about to happen,” Glover said. She has been planning to leave Oklahoma one day, but she never thought she had to do it in this situation. “It’s hard to get rid of your family and everyone you care about,” she said. “We’re basically going to start over. It’s very scary.”
Nicole McAfee, executive director of Oklahoma’s liberal arts advocacy group for two, believes that the proposal for bills such as SB 129 willfully look extreme. Then, legislators can make a “compromise”, and the impact of its original text is not far away. Their team is tracking at least 45 state bills targeting LGBTQ people, with more than a dozen aimed at limiting access to trans health care. Both SB 250 and SB 252 will limit public funds for minors; they may pass this year. Another bill, HB 1011, would prohibit gender care for Oklahomans under the age of 21.
The bill promoted in the Oklahoma Legislature opposed the recommendations of major medical associations that view gender-prudent care as “Necessary in medicine“For transgender youth. The American Medical Association has repeatedly stated that politicians interfere with this care is “inappropriate and harmful”.
“It is especially important to make sure people know that there is no age when it is prohibited to perform the best practice health care for trans people,” McAfee said.
Oklahoma has reviewed some of the care for trans youth. October 2022, Republican Gov. Kevin Stitt signs SB 3which prevented minors from gender care funding at OU Health, the only children’s hospital in the state.
On Monday, Stert delivered Status Address It is also clearly stated that restricting this care to minors is a top priority. He applauded the lawmakers with a warm applause, “I call on the Legislature to send me a bill that prohibits all gender transition surgery and hormone therapy for minors in Oklahoma.”
However, outside the state Capitol building, dozens of protesters-Oklahomans, organizers and policy advocates gathered every day to oppose Steet’s proposed future rally.
