Watch: Zelensky-Trump’s key moment in the White House talk

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky returned to the White House on Monday to meet with U.S. President Donald Trump to end new talks aimed at the Ukrainian war.

Several European leaders also went to the meeting to attend the summit that failed to cease fire just days after Trump met with Russian President Putin in Alaska.

This is a key gain from the Washington talks.

Zelensky launches a charm attack

Given his last visit to the Oval Office in February, the Ukrainian president went out of his way to become his American and attracted his American host, including a string of six “Thank you” in the first few minutes of the meeting.

The last time he was in the White House, Zelensky was scolded by Vice President JD Vance for their lack of gratitude for their support for Ukraine during the war.

Another argument at the February meeting – Zelensky’s costume – also paid off.

This time, Zelensky was wearing a dark suit instead of his traditional military outfit, and when the same reporter was asked about his clothes, he had previously criticized him for not wearing the Oval Office on the suit, not wearing the suit.

After reporters told him that he looked “good”, Zelensky hit back at the last time he wore “the same suit”, which drew laughter from reporters, Trump and other officials in the room.

He added: “As you can see, I changed.”

Zelensky also tried to play Trump’s family during the meeting, and a letter handed over to U.S. President Olena Zelenska, a first lady in Ukraine, will be handed over to Melania Trump.

“To you, this is not your wife.”

The letter was served just days after a letter from Trump to Vladimir Putin in Melania, Alaska, who called on Putin to protect children’s “innocence” and “foster hope for the next generation.”

“She saw it and was heartbroken,” Trump said of his wife’s letter to Putin.

“She would love to see it end. She was very public, very proud, and with great sorrow because so many people were killed.”

Trump hints about security assurance

One of the questions asked to Zelensky was about what he needed from the United States to keep his country safe. Is it troops, intelligence, or equipment?

The moment he seemed to try to suppress the urgency throughout most of the press conference, Zelensky leaned against his chair, stressing: “Everything.”

“We need a strong Ukrainian army,” he added. “It’s about weapons, personnel, training missions and intelligence.”

The reporter put pressure on this and Trump mentioned Kiev’s security guarantee several times.

He said Europe will be Ukraine’s “first line of defense” but also promised to “participate”.

The president said at one point: “We will provide them with good protection.”

This is Trump’s most decisive and decisive on security guarantees, which is often considered crucial to any deal with Russia.

The U.S. president said on Monday that Putin accepted Ukraine’s security assurance as part of the peace deal at last week’s Alaska summit.

However, the lack of details about what these guarantees might contain is related to Kiev and Europe, and the closed leaders will undoubtedly try to impress Trump that the deterrence of the United States is more than just symbolic.

Welcoming the movement of weapons that continues to Ukraine. The promise of American boots on the ground will be even more important.

This level of commitment may be difficult to obtain from the United States at this stage.

However, Trump has not completely ruled out that the fact that it will be given to Ukraine and its allies, hoping that he can convince him.

Trilateral meeting on the card?

One of Trump’s highly picky goals is to organize three ways with Zelensky and Putin.

He said it was “when, if” such a meeting before his meeting with European leaders on Monday.

While this may be easier to work harder than the terms that define the peace agreement, it is by no means simple.

Zelensky has been working hard to meet Putin for months. This may be a testament to his argument that Russia does not take peace seriously because he knows Putin has no interest in agreeing to such meetings.

Indeed, the Kremlin repeatedly rejected this, arguing two weeks ago that the Russian and Ukrainian presidents did not have a reason to meet until the “proper distance” between the two positions.

Trump will hope his mediation efforts make up for the distance now.
