Karen Bass, Los Angeles The mayor raised a curfew in downtown Los Angeles Tuesday, imposed in protests against Donald Trump’s conflict with police and vandalism in the city’s crackdown on immigration.

The curfew was imposed on June 10, providing “successful crime prevention and repression efforts” and protecting shops, restaurants, businesses and residents from people engaged in vandalism.

On Monday, she trimmed the hours after the reduction in arrests during night demonstrations, noting that the protests subsequently reduced violence and vandalism in the downtown area.

When the curfew was imposed, Bass said the city “had a turning point” after 23 businesses were broken into and robbed, blamed on the inciteers who hoped to cause trouble.

The curfew covers the relatively small slice of the sprawling city – the 1 square metre (2.5 square kilometers) portion of the city, which includes the area where protests took place.

Last week, Trump ordered about 4,000 National Guards and 700 Marines to the second largest city in the U.S. after his protests on immigration law enforcement.

On Sunday, Trump directed federal immigration officials to prioritize deportation from Democratic-run cities, a move taken after massive protests broke out in Los Angeles and other major cities against its administration’s immigration policies.
