The Philadelphia Eagles were ready for the season in the summer of 2012, and the tragedy hit the team’s head coach, the coach at the time. Andy Reidand his family.
“We were preparing for the preseason that week,” former Eagles Professional Personnel Director, Lewis Riddickrecalled in episode 2 kingdomThursday, August 14th, premiered on ESPN at 10 pm ET. “I can tell immediately what is wrong.”
Reid received his eldest son, Garrettwas found dead in his room at Lehigh University near the team boot camp facility.
It was later discovered that Garrett died of an unexpected heroin overdose. He is 29 years old.
At the time of his death, Garrett served as an assistant strength and conditioning coach for the Hawks.
“These results sadly confirm what we have always expected,” the Reed family said in a statement after the autopsy results. “We know that Garrett’s long-term battle with addiction will be difficult. But he will always have a love and respect for the courage he showed in trying to overcome it. Finally, we feel comforted by our faith and know that he is in a better place.”
Riddick, now an ESPN commentator, said he knew Garrett’s addiction struggle while he was together in Philadelphia.
“I just watched Garrett the day before,” Ridick recalls. “Garrett is one of the stories you took root for him because he went through everything about drug addiction. But he was such a weird guy. He had a big personality.”
Ridick added: “He’s a kid and he’s trying to kick it, trying to be organized and trying to be organized and living in a dorm opposite his father in the camp. The demons got him.

McNabb said at the funeral: “I’m at the funeral.” kingdom. “Andy puts his feelings aside to make sure everyone else can. He continues to be the backbone of the family, catering to everyone who comes to support.”
Riddick also recalls a poignant moment at Garrett’s funeral, where Andy provides him with a pillar of support at his son’s memorial service.
“I’m in a mess,” Riddick said. “and [Andy] He was surrounding his arms around me and comforting me. This is his son, two feet from him. I remember looking at him, I remember thinking, “You can’t be so strong.”
A few days after Garrett’s death, Andy was on the podium at the Eagles Training Camp, and his strength was fully demonstrated.
“I’m a modest person standing in front of you,” Andy said. “A very modest man. I’m humble because of the pouring. It’s incredible. I know my son will feel the same.”
Garrett’s father, mother survived Tammyhis brothers, Britt and Spencerand his sisters, Crosby and Drew Ann.
The 2012 season will mark Andy’s final season in Philadelphia as the Hawks will fire him in December after 14 seasons.
Andy was named head coach for the Kansas City Chiefs in January 2013, coaching and winning three Super Bowls over the past 12 seasons.
