Why did Trump and Putin meet in Alaska?

The United States and Russia have agreed to hold a meeting next Friday between Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin to discuss ways to end the Ukrainian war.

Trump announced the meeting last Friday, the same day that Russia agreed to a ceasefire, or faces more U.S. sanctions.

Russia and Ukraine held three rounds of talks between Russia and Ukraine this summer, which has not brought the two sides closer to peace.

This is our knowledge of the meeting between the two leaders, which was held in Alaska – former Russian territory, which became a U.S. state only in 1959.

Trump has been working hard – without much success – to end the war in Ukraine.

As a candidate, Trump promised that he could end the war within 24 hours of taking office. He also repeatedly claimed that if he had served as president during the Russian invasion, the war “never happened.”

Last month, Trump told the BBC Putin was “disappointed” with him.

The frustration is getting bigger and bigger, Trump sets a deadline for August 8, and Putin agrees to an immediate ceasefire or faces more severe U.S. sanctions.

With the deadline hitting, Trump announced that he and Putin will meet in person on August 15.

According to Trump, the meeting follows “productive” talks with Putin in Moscow on Wednesday, according to U.S. Special Envoy Steve Witkoff.

A White House official said Trump is willing to hold a trilateral meeting, including Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.

But, for now, it remains the Trump-Pudin summit, as the Russian leader initially asked.

In response to news from the Alaska summit, Zelensky said that any agreement without Kiev’s opinion would constitute a “dead decision.”

Zelensky spoke in a telegram Friday after Trump said he needed to “exchange territory” to get Moscow and Kiev to reach an agreement.

“We will not reward Russia for its implementation,” Zelensky wrote. “Any decision against us, without any decision by Ukraine, is also a decision against peace.”

In his speech to Fox New on Sunday, U.S. Vice President JD Vance suggested that Zelensky could join Putin and Trump for talks later.

But for now, he said Zelensky’s meeting with Putin was not “productive” before Trump met with the Russian leader in Alaska.

“Basically, the U.S. president has to be the one who brings the two together,” he said.

The U.S. president claimed on Friday that a deal to “stop the killings” was “very close.” He also reportedly put forward some ideas about the idea that both sides agreed to stop the fight necessary.

While both Russia and Ukraine say they also want the war to end, both seem to want something that the other side is desperately opposed.

Ukraine has always insisted that it would not accept Russian control over the areas it occupied, most notably Crimea.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky completely refuted the idea. “There’s nothing to talk about here. It’s a violation of our constitution,” he said.

So far, Putin has not stood out from his territorial demands, Ukraine’s neutrality and the future scale of the army.

Russia invades the countryPutin’s belief, in some ways, is that Ukraine is becoming westernized and accused the Western defensive coalition of NATO for using the country to gain a foothold and bring its troops closer to Russia’s borders.

The Trump administration has been trying to shake European leaders with a ceasefire deal that would hand over a large portion of Ukrainian territory to Russia, according to CBS News, a U.S. partner at the BBC.

The deal will allow Russia to control the Crimean Peninsula and to the Donbas region of the eastern Ukrainian region composed of Donetsk and Luhansk, according to sources familiar with the negotiations.

Russia illegally occupied Crimea in 2014, and its troops controlled most of the Donbas region.

Under the agreement, Russia will have to abandon the Ukrainian region and Zaporizhzhia in the Ukrainian region, currently with some military control.

“It will be changed to improvements between the two,” Trump told reporters at the White House on Friday.

Vance said in an interview with Fox that any future deals “will not make anyone super happy”.

“You have to achieve peace here…you can’t point it out,” he said. “The way to peace is that there are decisive leaders sitting down to force people together.”

On Friday night, Trump posted a social event on the truth of his social media website, the “highly anticipated meeting” between him and Putin will be held on August 15 in “Grand State of Alaska.”

“There are more details to follow,” he said.

Trump has said that the meeting location “will be a very popular place for a number of reasons.”

The exact location of their meeting in Alaska has not been released yet.

The United States purchased Alaska from Russia in 1867, giving historical significance to the conference.

Yuri Ushakov, assistant to the Russian president, said the location was “quite logical” and that both countries were neighbors and that the Bering Strait separated it.

“It seems logical for our delegation to just fly over the Bering Strait and at such an important and expected summit for the leaders of the two countries in Alaska.”

Alas Plus once occupied a central position in U.S. diplomacy in March 2021, when Joe Biden’s newly-cast diplomatic and national security team met in Anchorage.

The people who sat down were excited, and the Chinese accused the Americans of “condescending and hypocrisy.”
