Sources told the U.S. media that the U.S. Department of Justice has filed a subpoena, ordering New York Attorney General Letitia James to testify to prove her civil fraud investigation into President Donald Trump.

CBS, a US partner of the BBC, said James’s office also received another subpoena about her investigation into the National Rifle Association.

According to CBS, the investigation into James was led by the U.S. Attorney’s Office in the upstate New York area.

The New York Attorney General’s Office fought back against the investigation by the state’s top law enforcement official.

“Any weaponization of the judicial system should disturb every American,” the office said in a statement.

“We strongly support the successful lawsuit against the Trump Organization and the National Rifle Association and we will continue to support the rights of New Yorkers.”

James’ attorney Abbe Lowell also issued a statement saying retaliation against James’ investigation of Trump’s business is “the most blatant and desperate example of this administration’s campaign for presidential political retribution.”

The Justice Department has not published comments on the subpoena.
