Smoke from Canadian wildfires raised New York’s air quality index to 123 at noon Monday, and Buffalo reached an unhealthy 152.
The smog has prompted people to warn of children, the elderly, and sensitive groups with respiratory or heart conditions in order to stay indoors.
In Canada, at least 760 wildfires are burning nationwide, and officials say more than 16.8 billion acres (6.8 million hectares) have been burned so far this year. At least 205 fires were considered out of control.
