NASA has discussed the discussion of building reactors on the moon’s surface, but Duffy’s directives provide a more definite timeline and speed up the process. Duffy also serves as interim administrator for the Space Agency.

“Fission Surface Power (FSP) is both an indispensable and sustainable part of the moon, and a Mars force architecture for future human space exploration missions,” the directive states. “To properly advance this critical technology to support the future lunar economy, high power generation on Mars and strengthen our national security in space is a necessary condition for the agency to act quickly.”

NASA said China and Russia have announced on several occasions that they would place the reactor on the moon by the mid-2030s. If successful, this could lead to the declaration of a “outside zone” which could inhibit the establishment of presence in the United States there.

“A very specific region of the moon is crucial,” Duffy recently said on Hannity. “We know that Chinese want to get there too, so speed is essential.”

The move means that NASA will continue to invest in nuclear development despite the Pentagon’s recent cancellation of its joint program for nuclear-powered rocket engines.

The agency will be asked to seek recommendations for a 100-kilowatt nuclear reactor for launch by 2030, about one planned to be placed in China People on the Moonwithin 60 days after the directive.

Duffy talked to Fox News about NASA’s Artemis plan’s goal is to bring Americans to the moon.

“We’re going to build a base camp,” Duffy said. “And what we’ve learned on the moon will take us to Mars.”

Duffy also issued another directive to quickly replace the International Space Station, a priority for NASA. The agency plans to award at least two companies, preferably four, within six months of the agency’s request for recommendations, which is a contract.
