An American dentist who poisoned his wife was acquitted of not guilty after a jury in Colorado found him guilty of murder and other charges.
James Craig, 47, had an affair when he murdered his wife Angela Craig in March 2023.
Prosecutors said he gave her deadly cyanide when he was sick in the hospital after shaking his wife’s protein with arsenic.
Prosecutors also argued during a two-week trial that the dentist felt a marriage plagued but faced financial difficulties and did not want to divorce.
Defense attorneys have argued that Angela Craig, then 43, died of suicide because she was saddened by her husband’s “continuous” affairs.
However, the Arapaho County coroner determined that she died of cyanide and tetrahydrozoline, a chemical used in eye drops.
There is evidence that James Craig searched phrases, including “How many grams of purebred arsenic will kill humans” and “Can arsenic be detected in an autopsy?” and transported to potassium cyanide in his dental exercises.
Two days later, Angela Craig was taken to a hospital in a suburban Denver after drinking a protein shake that left her dizzy and weak.
Video from the security camera shows the dentist holding a syringe before entering his wife’s ward. Her condition deteriorated rapidly and she was declared brain dead a few days later.
A jury found Craig guilty of first-degree murder on Wednesday, as well as other charges including murder, due to his attempt to get a prison inmate to kill the detective in the case. He was found not guilty.
One of the couple’s six children issued a victim impact statement.
“I should have been able to trust my father,” according to U.S. News. “He was supposed to be my hero, but instead, he will always be the villain in my book.”
Arapaho County District Court Judge Shay Whitaker sentenced Craig to life imprisonment without parole murder, plus 33 years of additional charges.
“This is Angela’s husband [poisoning] She slowed her death,” District Attorney Amy Padden told reporters at a press conference after the sentencing. “It was not passionate. This is intentional. ”
