American football coach Deion Sanders revealed that he underwent surgery to remove the bladder after the cancer diagnosis.
One of his doctors said at a press conference Monday that Sanders, coach of the University of Colorado Boulder football team, has now “cured cancer.”
The surgery occurred in May when the tumor was found in the bladder as part of a routine health check. The announcement came after media reports that Mr. Sanders was about to resign for health reasons.
But the two-time Super Bowl champion will continue to serve as head coach for the upcoming college football season.
Janet Kukreja, a urologist at the University of Colorado, said the tumor is “advanced” and leads to “high-risk non-muscular bladder invasive cancer.”
Dr. Kukreja added that the surgery to remove the bladder was robotic.
“I’m happy to report that the result of the surgery was that he was cured from cancer,” she said.
Asked if he thought the diagnosis would end his coaching career, Mr Sanders said retirement was impossible.
“I always knew I was going to coach again,” he said. “In my heart, God will never let me coach again. [I] Never thought so. ”
As he affectionately calls Coach Prime, he said the surgery was “a change throughout the day” and he is still satisfying his new life.
“I really depend on dependency; I can’t control my bladder,” he said, referring to the brand of adult diapers.
One of his sons posted a video online on Sunday, where Mr. Sanders sat in the hospital bed and talked about his health challenges.
“Yesterday was tough because I had to follow the will. It wasn’t easy at all, thinking you might not be here,” he said in a video shot in May.
At the press conference, Mr. Sanders said: “Please check out yourself; especially African Americans. Be checked out because if I didn’t, it could be another party.”
According to the National Cancer Institute, Black Americans have the highest mortality rate.
In the past, Mr. Sanders had other health problems and in 2021, he had two toes on his left foot due to a blood clot.
Before becoming a coach, Mr. Sanders had a successful career in the NFL and won the Super Bowl with the San Francisco 49ers in 1995 and a year later with the Dallas Cowboys. In 2011, he was inducted into the Professional Football Hall of Fame.
He also played professional baseball before and was the only one to compete in the Super Bowl and the Baseball World Series.
