A 42-year-old man faces charges of terrorism and attack after being stabbed in a Walmart supermarket in Michigan.
A attacker stabbed five men and six women, including Walmart employees, Saturday afternoon in Traverse City.
The victims range from 21 to 84 years old and are all expected to survive. The suspect Bradford James Gille will be arraigned on Monday or Tuesday.
Investigators said the stabbing was random and they have not disclosed their motives, but they said the terrorist allegations make sense because the mass attack is believed to be designed to bring fear and destruction to the entire community.
Addressing reporters on Sunday, Greater Travers County Sheriff Michael Shea said officers began to arrive at the store two minutes after the first call passed.
“At the time the agent arrived, a citizen armed with a pistol faced with the male suspect in the parking lot and stopped him from hurting further persons and leaving,” he said. “The agent detained the suspect without further incidents.”
He added that the suspect’s motive has not been determined.
He added: “With the FBI’s assistance, our detectives interviewed him in detail and that would be part of the investigation.”
“This kind of violence is unacceptable,” said Walmart spokesman Joe Pennington.
“Our idea is with the injured and we thank the first responders for their quick action.”
Federal personnel are responding to any necessary support to local authorities, FBI Deputy Director Dan Bongino said Saturday.
“Our ideas are stuck with victims and the community about this cruel violence,” said Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer.
The city of Travers is about 255 miles (410 kilometers) northwest of Detroit.
