Three senior deputy sheriffs were killed in a bombing last Friday, the biggest death in an incident since the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.

Sheriff Robert Luna said the men were making two “military” grenades when one detonated. According to the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Guns that is investigating the explosion, Luna said the other person had no prompt.

Luna said authorities had X-rayed special law enforcement vehicles, searched the explosion area and inspected office space and gyms, but no second grenade was found.

“You’ll find drifting. We’ve seen everything possible,” he said, adding that no one can get into the area.

Luna said the day before the explosion, a grenade was caught in an apartment building in Santa Monica. Detective X-rays fired the devices and thought they were inert, he said. The devices were then considered “destroyed and rendered safe” in the Biscailuz training facility, where it exploded.

Luna said he called for an independent review of the policies and practices of the arson and explosives teams and has changed the way they handle these types of situations.

“All future explosive devices, inert or not, will be considered as living and will be disposed of accordingly.”

It is not known whether the grenade has any connection with the army. The people who were killed were detectives: Joshua Kelly Eklund, Victor Remus, Detective William Osborne. They worked in the department for 19, 22 and 33 years respectively.

The Alcohol, Tobacco and Gun Bureau is expected to release a final report on its death in September.
