The United States has begun building new “secondary” walls on its southwestern border with Mexico to strengthen existing steel fences that divide the two countries.
According to a statement issued by the U.S. Customs and Border Protection, about 7 miles (11 kilometers) of walls are being built in New Mexico and are part of a plan to bridge the “critical” gap in the border and improve security operations.
In June, U.S. Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem issued a new exemption for building a new border wall of about 36 miles (58 kilometers) in Arizona and New Mexico.
