A flight from Cancun, Mexico to London was forced to divert and land in Maine this week after two passengers began fighting.

An emergency landing around 21:30 (01:30 GMT) on Tuesday resulted in all 267 passengers being forced to spend the night in Bangor, Maine.

By the time the flight landed in a coastal state of the United States, the crew on board had already timed out. The airline then brought a relief officer on the flight, which eventually departed at 15:00 on Wednesday.

The two passengers involved in the fight did not face criminal charges. However, both of them “returned to their home country on separate outbound flights.”

787 Dreamliner, operated by TUI in the UK, landed safely at the Gatwick Airport in London late Wednesday.

“The incident involved foreign-to-foreign flights, which were transferred due to a dispute between the two passengers during the flight,” a spokesperson for the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) said. “After arriving, CBP officials removed the two men from the plane. Although no criminal charges were filed, the CBP handled the two subjects to expedite the removal.”

Recordings of pilots’ conversations with air traffic control before an emergency landing show when the pilot asked officials landing in Maine to direct them to the runway with officials on the ground.

“The cockpit is safe, there are two passengers fighting and the crew almost put them under control,” the pilot said.

After some back and forth, air traffic controllers on the ground in Maine told the pilots that safety would be waiting on the ground as the plane landed.
