Donald Trump said European leaders will visit the United States on Monday or Tuesday to discuss ways to end the Ukrainian war.

The U.S. president added that he will also talk to Russian President Vladimir Putin and said his administration is ready to enter the second phase of sanctions in Moscow.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said sanctions were the “right idea” and urged European countries to stop buying Russian energy.

So far, Russia has launched the largest aerial bombing in Ukraine, killing four people and attacking the main government building in Ukraine for the first time.

After the attack, Russia fired at least 810 drones and 13 missiles into Ukraine, and Trump said he was “not satisfied with the whole situation.”

“Some European leaders will come to our country on Monday or Tuesday,” Trump said. It is not clear who Trump is referring to.

Russia has stepped up its attack on Ukraine since Trump and Putin held a summit in Alaska last month.

Speaking to ABC News, Zelensky said it was “unfair” for European partners to continue purchasing Russian oil and gas.

He added: “We have to stop [buying] From Russia and any type of energy that deals with Russia. If we want to stop them, we will not be able to reach any deal. ”

Zelensky also welcomes Trump’s plan to impose secondary tariffs on countries that trade with Russia – aimed at frustrating Moscow’s ability to fund war.

“I think it’s the right idea to sign the tariffs to countries that continue to reach an agreement with Russia,” he said.

Russia has sold about $9.85 billion (£72.9 billion) of oil and gas since its full invasion of Ukraine since March 2022, according to the think tank Energy and Clean Air Research Center.

The biggest buyers are China and India. The EU has greatly reduced (but has not stopped completely) buying Russian energy. In June, Brussels made plans to end all purchases by 2027.

Last month, the United States 50% of goods from India As a punishment for continuing to buy Russian oil. The Indian government said it will continue to pursue the “best deal” to buy oil’s economic benefits.

At a meeting in Beijing last week, Russia said it would increase Natural gas supply to China.

Zelensky’s intervention comes as the move, including Russia, agrees again to increase production, will put pressure on oil prices.

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent told NBC media that the U.S. is seeking more EU support to impose secondary tariffs on countries that buy Russian oil.

Bessent said that if EU countries raise sanctions and secondary tariffs on countries that buy Russian oil, “the Russian economy will collapse completely, which will put President Putin in a difficult situation.”

He added: “We are now playing between how long the Ukrainian army lasts and how long the Russian economy can last.”
