The Court of Appeal has fined $500 million (£372 million) and Donald Trump was ordered to pay in a civil fraud trial in New York last year.

Judge Arthur Engoron has ordered Trump to expand the value of Trump’s organization’s property to obtain favorable loans to pay for the fees.

In the ruling, a judge in the New York Supreme Court Appeal Division said that while Trump is responsible for fraud, the nearly $5 billion fine is too high, meaning it violates protections for serious punishment in the U.S. Constitution.

In the case, Judge Ndoron has ordered Trump to pay a $355 million fine, but with the help of interest, the amount has grown to more than $500 million.

In cases against Trump, his two adult sons and the Trump Organization, Judge Ndoron also banned Trump from serving as a company director or loans from banks in the state for three years.

The merits of the original lawsuit filed by New York Attorney General Letitia James, the five judges’ appeal panel was accused of “endured and repeated fraud” by Trump and his son.
