Two policemen targeting domestic harassment calls were shot and killed UtahAuthorities said Monday that a man was detained after bystanders convinced him to put the gun down.
A sheriff’s deputy and a police dog were also shot and injured while they arrived in the neighborhood they arrived in.
Police said the deputy was released from the hospital on Monday and the dog was hospitalized in fairness.
“These officials are absolutely heroes,” said Cade Reyes, police chief in neighboring Brigham City, during a press conference Monday morning.
Police received multiple 911 calls from a house in the city. A single official from the Tremonton-Garland Police Department arrived first when the man came out with a gun and was talking at home, police said in a press release. Reyes said he believed the man lived in the house.
“The male opened fire at the officers, attacked and killed the officers,” the press release said. It said a second official in the department was “immediately fired by the same male suspect” and was killed.
Police said the bystander convinced the man to put down his weapon after the officer was shot. Police said a dedicated tactical team responded to cleaning up the house and confirmed there were no further threats.
“Immediately upon arrival, they started to catch fire,” police detective Crystal Baker Yang City Telled reporters earlier. “They asked for other units – and then stopped answering the radio.”
Police said in a press release that the man was arrested for aggravated murder.
The officer and suspect’s names have not been released immediately.
Tremonton has about 10,000 people, in the north Utah. It is about 75 miles (121 km) north of Salt Lake City.
