Rapper Sean Kingston was sentenced to three and a half years in federal prison in a one-million-dollar fraud scheme.
The “Beautiful Girl” singer was convicted earlier this year with his mother, who stole luxury items including watches, a 232-inch LED TV, bulletproof Cadillac Escalade and furniture for over $1 million (£738,000) in a wire fraud scheme.
Prosecutors said Kingston’s legal name was Kisean Anderson – his mother used the rapper’s celebrity status to get victims to provide them with products and when payment would bring them fake gold wire receipts.
According to US media reports, the singer apologized to the court before being sentenced and said he had learned from his actions.
His mother, Janice Turner, was sentenced to five years in prison in July.
The Jamaican-American rapper, also known for the burning, takes you there and Eenie Meenie, who features singer Justin Bieber, was arrested in California in 2024, and will perform at the Army Training Base in the Mojave Desert.
His arrest came after authorities attacked his home near Fort Lauderdale, where his mother was detained.
Federal prosecutors said Kingston approached victims on social media, saying he wanted to buy luxury goods and then invited them to various homes in South Florida.
Federal prosecutors said Kingston promised the victims to post their products on his social media, sometimes proposing to recommend their products to other “high-profile celebrities.”
But when paying for the product, he or his mother sent them fake wire receipts, which falsely indicated that they had sent the money.
Authorities say most victims have never received a salary, although law enforcement officers did receive payments after they were involved in law enforcement or filed a lawsuit.
CBS, a BBC news partner, said the key evidence shown at the trial was a text message between Kingston and his mother discussing fake payment receipts.
“I tell you to [a] Fake receipts,” he wrote.
Kingston lawyer Zeljka Bozanic said the singer was “a gentle guy who became famous overnight”. Kingston still has a teenage mindset and doesn’t know how to run its bank account or business, he said.
He will start service time immediately.
