Unarmed soldiers who addressed and subdued gunmen at a Georgia military base on Wednesday were praised for their “heroism” and preventing death.
Brigadier General John Lubas said U.S. Army personnel attend immediately [towards] And attacked “When the suspect heard the shooting, U.S. Army Secretary Dan Driscoll said they “came to fight” to prevent further injuries and to exert first aid.
Five people were allegedly injured when the fire was opened at Fort Stewart base. All victims will recover.
The suspect was detained, and officials said they would not speculate on the motive when the investigation was conducted.
The suspect’s father told us the media that soldiers sent a mysterious text message to family members on the morning of the shooting.
Eddie Radford told the New York Times that his son sent a message to his aunt: “He loves everyone, and he’ll be in a better place because he’s about to do something.”
Mr. Radford, who had not seen the text message himself, said he had not noticed any abnormalities in his son’s behavior before the shooting. He added: “I’m having a hard time dealing with it.”
He also told The New York Times that his son sought a transfer from Fort Stewart and complained about the alleged racism at the base. BBC News has asked the Department of Defense to respond to the claim.
Six soldiers were awarded a service medal for their role in stopping gunners on Thursday.
“In coercion and fire, they encountered the sound of gunfire, knocked down the attackers, and then took care of their comrades, and it would all be different,” said U.S. Secretary of the Army Dan Driscoll.
“Heroism displayed under the fire is something we all should know.”
The gunmen opened fire at a sprawling military base about 240 miles (386 kilometers) southeast of the state’s capital Atlanta around 11:00 on Wednesday.
General Lubas said the soldiers ran to subdue the gunman and fell down the gun, describing how a soldier jumped to the top of the suspect and bound him before police arrived.
Four other soldiers provided medical services to the victims “without hesitation” and helped stop bleeding before paramedics arrived at the scene.
Liberty County Sheriff’s Office/CBSMelissa Taylor, one of six medal winners, told reporters she was in the office and saw smoke in the hall when she heard a fellow soldier shouting “gunshots went out.”
“I noticed a soldier lying on the ground, so I rushed to the soldiers and started providing assistance,” she said.
Army Secretary Driscoll said: “They were unarmed and ran around and dealt with an armed person who knew they were actively shooting their partners, colleagues, fellow soldiers.”
Three of the five injured soldiers have been released from the hospital, while two injured soldiers continue to receive treatment. No publicly named.
General Lubas said that among the two more severely injured, one “performed well” while the other “had a longer road to recovery.”
Officials previously confirmed that the suspect Sergeant Radford, a member of the Second Brigade combat team, had not been deployed to the combat zone before.
They said he was in pretrial imprisonment and would likely be transferred to a military detention center.
The U.S. Army also said he was previously arrested for driving under this influence, a fact that it was known to the military before the attack.
The Army Criminal Investigation Department is conducting an investigation with the FBI.
