Bill and Hillary Clinton summoned in Congress Epstein investigation

Former U.S. President Bill Clinton and his wife Hillary are a high-profile figure who will investigate the late Jeffrey Epstein, a legal subpoena from a congressional committee.

House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer sent subpoena to the Clintons and eight others.

The committee is seeking information about Epstein’s history after President Donald Trump decided not to release more archives about the dead financiers.

The decision sparked anger among Trump supporters and some Democrats who refused to accept the Justice Department statement that there was no “list of criminal clients” in Epstein’s archives.

Amid the rift between Trump and some of Epstein’s supporters, the committee consists of Democrats and Republicans, recently voted to issue a subpoena.

The group also summoned records related to Epstein to the Department of Justice itself.

Epstein’s colleague Ghislaine Maxwell, the lawyer currently sentenced to 20 years in prison for sexual trafficking, said she was willing to testify before a strong committee of inquiry and strictly protected by law. However, her plan to be postponed indefinitely on August 11.

The Epstein legal legend has spanned twenty years, with the Florida State Police and the FBI first reviewing allegations of sexual abuse in the early 2000s.

Comer wrote in his letter to everyone that the committee must “oversee the federal government’s enforcement of sexual trafficking laws, especially its handling and prosecution of Mr. Epstein” and Maxwell.

He also said the deposition will begin this month and run through the fall, with Bill Clinton scheduled for October 14.

Former lawyers Merrick Garland, Loretta Lynch, Eric Holder and Alberto Gonzales, along with Jeff Sessions and William Barr, were called up to lead the Justice Department during Trump’s first term. Former FBI Sirectors James Comey and Robert Mueller were also sent to subpoena.

The Clinton administration predated Epstein’s investigation, but the couple’s critics have long questioned their relationship with Epstein.

In 2019, a spokesman said the former president “knows nothing about the horrible crimes of Florida that Jeffrey Epstein had been charged a few years ago in Florida or his recent crimes in New York.”

The Clinton Foundation and Bill Clinton’s press office did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The Justice Department has no comments.

The committee is seeking all documents and communications about Epstein and Maxwell, “related to trafficking, exploitation of minors, sexual abuse or related activities”, as well as U.S. archives of criminal cases against Maxwell and Epstein, 2007 documents in 2007, and unprosecuted Epstein and federal investigations into former financiers.

It is not clear whether the individuals named by Comer will appear before the committee and if so, they will testify publicly.

Only four other former presidents have obtained subpoenas from the Congressional Committee over the past 200 years, and only two have provided testimony.

It is worth noting that the committee investigating the Capitol riot on January 6, 2021 voted in a televised hearing to the subpoena, which subsequently filed a lawsuit to stop it. When the committee was dissolved, the subpoena was abandoned.

Federal prosecutors accused Epstein of sexual trafficking in minors and other crimes in 2019 during the first Trump administration.

He died in prison in August, and almost immediately afterwards, many began to question his death.

This summer, Attorney General Pam Bondi announced her department after conducting a review No evidence to open a list of clients for a long time.

She also said the evidence supports Epstein’s death from suicide. She said the government will no longer release archives.

The announcements have sparked anger among some Trump supporters who promised to release Epstein records on his campaign.

“Jeffrey Epstein is dead. Ghislaine Maxwell is not the case,” Maxwell’s attorney wrote in a filing.

“Whatever the public interest in Epstein, her legal choice is feasible with the defendant still alive and her due process rights remain.”

The BBC has asked the White House to comment on the subpoena.
