Borussia Dortmund withdraws a vibrant comeback from Mamelodi sunset to score a 4-3 victory and approaches the club’s World Cup knockout stage. Dortmund trailed 11 minutes from the South African champion at TQL Stadium in Cincinnati, but the rally won the second game in Group F and moved the rankings to a four-quarter position, higher than the sunset.
Felix Nmecha, Serhou Guirassy and Jobe Bellingham scored for the Bundesliga Club, who also profited from their own goals. Lucas Ribeiro scored in the second half of Iqraam Rayners and Lebo Mothiba in the second half as they hoped to drop 4-1 in the blazing hot conditions.
“We had a tough fight with the Heat and an opponent who could handle the conditions better. It was a game we wanted to play and try to win the World Cup, but it was very difficult for all teams,” said Dortmund’s coach Niko Kovac. Dortmund posted a picture showing their replacement watching the first half in the locker room to escape the heat.
Ribeiro burst through a static Dortmund defense, picking up the ball midway and sliding over two opponents to hit the shock. But the lead lasted only five minutes, and his short misaligned pass to Nmecha before a catastrophic error occurred by Sunset goalkeeper Ronwen Williams, which gave him easy grasp of the equalizer.
Dortmund made a sleek spot between one, two, two passes between Julian Brandt and Guirassy. Bellingham beat Williams directly on Williams’ cross on a 3-1 3-1, delaying a second hit rate and then defeating the goalkeeper.
Rayner hit the sunset woodwork within 10 minutes of the second half, but the cross on the left stood out from Sundowns defender Khuliso Mudau, Dortmund expanded its lead.
Two minutes later, when Teboho Mokoena’s free kick floated to Rayners, the South African side stepped back, who hit the post in the foot but bounced back on his head, and he didn’t waste a second chance.
Mothiba hit the 90th minute as Sunset stole possession while the substitutes scored from close range, but they couldn’t find the equalizer.
“I think it’s obvious that we’re pushing the game to the highest level and that we’re able to play openly against such a strong opponent. I’m proud of the resilience shown,” said Sunset coach Miguel Cardoso.
