Two people died after attacking several hikers in Banff National Park in the Canadian Rockies.

Three more people were reportedly injured as rescuers continued to search for potential survivors. Authorities did not say whether anyone was missing.

The first victim was a 70-year-old woman from Calgary. The second was found Friday, according to a joint statement by the Canadian Park and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP).

The Bow Glacier Falls Hiking Trail is 6 miles (9 km) long and runs along the Bow Lake. It is classified as a moderate hiking challenge.

The RCMP said Friday that the condition of three injured people who were taken to the hospital on Thursday has been escalated to stable.

The rock fall happened Thursday afternoon north of Lake Louise, a tourist town 124 miles (200 kilometers) northwest of Calgary, Alberta.

“We are saddened by the recent tragedy at Bow Glacier Falls in Banff National Park. On behalf of Canada Park, my thoughts are with the family and friends of the affected people.”

Videos of the event shared online videos show a large rock falling from the hillside and heavy dust rises.

Bow Lake is now closed and as search continues, unordered in the area is in place.

“We are considering all the people involved and hope they want them to be safe as they wait for further details,” Alberta Prime Minister Danielle Smith said in a social media post.

Niclas Brundell witnessed the rocks falling while hiking in the area with his wife.

“We heard this, like ‘big’ noise, the whole roof of the wall became loose,” he told CBC News. “And we were just starting to sprint. I yelled to my wife, ‘Go, go, go! We need to run as fast as possible.

“We just kept sprinting and I could never see the people behind us again because they were all in that rock. I saw the rock rolling from there.

Mr Brundell estimated there were 15 to 20 people in the area when the rocks fell.
