The EU’s first ever defense commissioner issued a stark warning: The world’s most dangerous moment may arrive in 2027, and Russia and China may coordinate positive actions aimed at overwhelming Western defense capabilities.
EU Defense and Space Commissioner Andrius Kubilius responded to the latest speech by the US Air Force Alexander Grynkewich, NATO’s top commander Used for air transport. Both officials have viewed 2027 as a potential flashpoint year, when simultaneous military operations in Moscow and Beijing could extend the transatlantic alliance to its limits.
“The most dangerous moment may be in 2027, when both Russia and China will make these positive moves in a coordinated manner,” Kubilius told reporters in a briefing in Washington.
Glinkevic warned last week that the United States and its European allies must prepare to fight two wars at the same time – one in Europe, if Russian President Vladimir Putin escalates in Ukraine or Eastern Europe, the other in the Pacific XI President Xi Jinping will trigger a Taiwan invasion.

“We’re going to need all the kits, equipment and ammunition to beat it,” Greenkeywich said.
In a speech late Monday, Kubilius said the United States had “right and reason” to shift its focus to China.
“We recognize that you, the Americans, actually have the right and reason to have a long-term perspective, are beginning to shift increasingly to the Indo-Pacific to mitigate China’s military power,” he said.
The former Lithuanian Prime Minister said: “We need to improve our defense capabilities and added: “That’s what we are doing. ”
Their warning coincides with issues that are increasingly concerned by the U.S. defense agencies as a whole, often referred to as the “Davidson Window”, a term proposed by former Indo-Pacific commander Chief Philip Davidson, who testified before Congress in 2021 that China could try to force re-rule with Taiwan in 2027 to a 2027 assessment that broadly prepares for military plans.

As China rapidly accelerates its military modernization plan, the window for 2027 is becoming increasingly urgent, aiming to realize the centenary of Xi Jinping’s People’s Liberation Army in 2027. Worry about Russia, too. Despite the significant losses in Ukraine, within the same time frame, it is possible to re-establish and redirect its power to the re-aggression of Eastern Europe – while exerting strategic pressure on both sides.
Kubilius traveled to Washington to assess potential gaps in European defense capabilities as the United States increasingly focused its strategic focus on the Indo-Pacific. He said EU member states are actively preparing for a change in U.S. military posture on the U.S. mainland.
As of 2025, more than 80,000 U.S. troops are stationed in Europe – this existence is expected to decline in the coming years as the Pentagon urges its European allies to take greater responsibility for their defense.
“We are preparing to take responsibility for the shoulders,” Kubilius said. “We don’t know what Americans will decide.”
Kubilius stressed that Europe must not only fund its defense, but also build it. He noted that the EU has reduced its dependence on weapons made in the United States from 60% to 40% of total imports and hopes to further reduce this dependence by increasing domestic production.

As a defense commissioner, Kubilius’s mission is to implement The $840 billion framework is “re-Europe”, Including providing 150 billion euros of loan facilities to member states to build their armed forces and industrial capacity.
Additionally, NATO leaders agreed at a summit in Washington last month that it agreed to a daunting guarantee to increase defense spending – increasing the benchmark from 2% of member states to 2% of GDP, a historic shift in global instability.
President Donald Trump, coupled with a sense of urgency, announced that the United States would provide Ukraine with an advanced weapon system – on the condition that European partners paid for that fee. Western Defense Ministers convened on Monday to discuss the proposed financing mechanism.
“We will send patriots to NATO and NATO will distribute it,” Trump said last week.

Kubilius declined to elaborate on what other weapons might be included in the package, but stressed the importance of firm support for Ukraine’s defense of a full-scale Russian invasion.
“China is looking at it,” he said. “China will be able to draw a conclusion that if Ukraine’s West is weak, then we can expect Chinese aggression against anyone.”
