A group of women were waiting to enter a Hollywood music venue in Vermont when they crashed Saturday at 02:00 local time.
The Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) said that when officers arrived, bystanders dragged the driver out of Nissan Versa and were attacking him. An attacker opened the driver.
The driver was taken to the hospital for surgery, LAPD added. His condition is unknown.
The vehicle passed through a taco stand, through a valet podium, and then entered the crowd, police said.
Images of the scene were shown on a gray car on the sidewalk with debris spreading on the ground and police were present.
According to its website, the nightclub club was hosting reggae/hip hop events at the time.
A law enforcement official told CNN that the driver is believed to be intoxicated.
Police described the suspect who opened fire during close combat and then fled the Hispanic man on foot. He wore a blue jersey and was probably equipped with a silver revolver.
Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass called the incident a “heartbreaking tragedy.”
“Angelenos’ heart was affected by all the victims this morning – with a full investigation into what is happening,” she said.
LAFD Captain Adam Vangerpen told reporters on the scene that all victims were taken to a hospital or a trauma center.
“It’s a very chaotic scene,” Captain Vangerpen said, adding: “Many bystanders from the club came out to help people.”
