The state’s attorney general announced that the suspect was charged with fatal shooting of a Minnesota State Assemblyman and her husband was charged in June with six federal charges.
The charges against Vance Boelter, 57, include charges that prosecutors say can be sentenced to a maximum sentence or death penalty.
Mr. Boelter was arrested on June 16 for alleged killings in Minnesota State Assemblyman Melissa Hortman and her husband Mark Hortman.
Mr. Boelter is still in custody in Minnesota and he also faces state charges. He has not entered the request yet.
According to prosecutors, Mr. Boelter stalked and shot two other state lawmakers – Minnesota Senator John Hoffman and his wife Yvette Hoffman. Prosecutors said he also planned a massive attack and police were thwarted.
Acting U.S. Attorney Joseph H Thompson said in a written statement: “Vance Boelter planned and held a horror night that shocked the core of Minnesota.”
“He had conducted targeted political assassination that he had never seen in Minnesota,” he said.
Prosecutors also issued a letter that they said Mr. Burt admitted to being a gunman and claimed that Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz asked him to kill us Senators Amy Klobuchar and Tina Smith for political purposes. Prosecutors and Waltz said the claim was totally wrong.
According to court documents, Mr. Boelter conducted prior research on the victims and their families in preparation for the June 14 attack.
Prosecutors said Mr. Burt approached Hoffman’s home in Champlin, Minnesota, disguised as a policeman, and when they answered the door, Senator Hoffman fired nine times and his wife, Ivette Hoffman, eight times. Then, he tried to shoot their daughter Hoffman.
Prosecutors said Mr. Burt then headed to the homes of two other elected officials in Minnesota, who were both left at the time, then drove to the Hotman’s house and shot the couple fatally.
Two days later, he was arrested near a family home in a woodland rural area west of Minneapolis.
