Overcoming in the tragedy, Dorsey and Josey left Los Angeles and returned to his hometown of Charleston, West Virginia, where he began to rebuild their lives. Five years later, the father and son fell into a “surreal” but happy rhythm.

It was great to watch him poke from one finger to kicking the ball with both hands. When he sang, he began to actually write notes. He said to me the other day, “Dad, I think I might want to be a musician. My mom is a singer, so why not me? I just think that’s a beautiful thing.”

Dorsey made sure Josey was in close contact with Rivera’s family and arranged regular FaceTime calls and visits with parents and siblings in Los Angeles. The 9-year-old is also encouraged to share his thoughts and feelings about Rivera when he thinks.

“Josie will be her legacy,” Dorsey shared. “I don’t know what he’s going to do, but I think he’s going to do great things.”
