U.S. President Donald Trump directed the Pentagon to be called the Ministry of War.
He will sign an executive order on Friday to require the Department of Defense to use a new name as a secondary title, with Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth being called the Minister of War.
The Pentagon (Overwatching the U.S. Armed Forces) was the successor to the Department of War, which was first established as a cabinet-level agency in 1789 and has been around until 1947.
The responsibility for establishing an executive department is in the U.S. Congress, which means that legal changes to the department’s name require an amendment.
The BBC saw the text of the executive order, which said: The name of the Ministry of War conveys a stronger message of preparation and determination that emphasizes only defense capabilities. ”
Trump has repeatedly proposed the idea of a name change, believing that the United States had previously named “incredible history of victory” in both world wars.
He also expressed optimism that lawmakers would support the change.
“I’m sure Congress will keep moving forward if we need it. I don’t even think we need that,” the president said last week. “But I believe Congress will keep moving forward if we need it.”
Trump and Heggs tried to focus the department on “fighting” and “warrior spirit.”
They believe the department has been too focused on diversity, equity and inclusion programs and “wake ideology.”
