According to the Labor Department, the four-year proposed project will work with U.S. training centers, registered apprenticeship programs, including community colleges for foreign training centers, and shipyards in Canada, Finland, Italy, Japan, South Korea and other countries to provide advanced shipbuilding skills for American workers.

The scholarship led by the Ministry of Labor International Labor Affairs Bureau will prioritize the training of boiler manufacturers, industrial electricians, steel workers, steamers, shipping and welders.

Likewise, the funding will be used to create a professional, internationally recognized trade course designed to promote more advanced training in the United States, a program designed to gain knowledge from allies and to allocate it more widely among workers within the United States to expand trade skills in the shipbuilding industry.

“Finding close cooperation with our allies will promote the Department of Labor’s mission to establish an effective shipbuilding apprenticeship program in the United States,” Labor Secretary Lori Chavez-Deremer said in a statement to Fox News Digital Digitalization. “President Trump restores U.S. maritime dominance by preparing our workforce to compete with China and strengthening our national security.”

In terms of shipbuilding, the United States and allies like South Korea and Japan have close competitors such as close to China.

According to the Center for Strategic and International Studies, China is responsible for more than 50% of global shipbuilding, while South Korea causes nearly 29% and Japan causes 13%. By comparison, the United States is only 0.1%

It also directed the agencies to develop a plan of maritime action and ordered the U.S. Trade Representative to compile a recommendation to address China’s “anti-competitive action within the shipbuilding industry.”

According to the Labor Department, the new scholarship program originated from Trump’s executive order.

Those eligible for funding opportunities include any business, international, educational or nonprofit organization. These include any faith-based organization, community-based organization or public international organization.

The application deadline is September 26.
