NAACP sues Texas to eliminate Democratic seats re-dividing plans

The National Association for the Advancement of People of Color (NAACP) is suing Texas’s re-division plan that will eliminate five seats in Democratic Congress.

NAACP filed a lawsuit Tuesday, arguing New Congress Map “Based on a racial basis, with discrimination purposes that are not allowed and controlled.” It refers to Texas Governor Greg Abbott and Texas Secretary of State Jane Nelson as plaintiffs.

“It is obvious that Texas’s efforts to re-dividify the midterm before next year’s midterm elections are racially motivated. The state’s aim is to reduce members of Congress representing the black community, and it is unconstitutional in itself,” Derrick Johnson, president and CEO of NAACP, said in a statement Tuesday.

Meanwhile, NAACP said it also encourages Blue countries to develop their own redistricting plans to offset the impact of the New Texas map.

“Currently, NAACP urges California, New York and all other states to act immediately by re-dividing and passing a new, legal and constitutional election map,” the organization wrote on Tuesday. “We must oppose unconstitutional actions in Texas and ensure that black Americans still speak in Congress if all else fails.”

Texas A new map was passed on Saturday, and despite weeks of breaking quorum by Democrats, it still achieved political victories, including fleeing the state to avoid a reallocation vote.
