Apollo 13 astronaut Jim Lovell received a tribute from Tom Hanks, who brought him to life in the Oscar-winning film and said he went to places most people dare not.

Lovell famously informed Mission Control: “Houston, we had problems.” Hanks later immortalized the lines from the movie, which slightly changed the sentence, “Houston, we had problems.”

Because their power and life support system were disabled, the crew was forced to abandon the moon’s landing and burned a slingshot at the far end of the moon using several engines to make one return to Earth. About three days after the explosion, they splashed safely in the South Pacific, resulting in the so-called Apollo project “Successful failure”.

“His many of his voyages around the Earth and his so close relationship with the moon was not caused by wealth or celebrities, but because such challenges are the process that fuels life,” Hanks wrote on Lovell’s Friday. “Who else is better than Jim Lovell.”
