Having lost his father in 2013, Class V student, 10-year-old, Mayank Chhawani, said, “Through this organ donation, my mother will give the joy of living to many others. It is something my mother would be proud of.” The Bairagarh resident’s mother was declared brain-dead on January 23. After the stipulated 48-hour period in Hamidia hospital, indications are that many lucky patients awaiting organ donation will benefit as a result of Mayank’s decision. It would be the first cadaveric organ donation of the New Year in Bhopal.

Only after brain death has been confirmed and the time of death noted, can organ donation become a possibility. The process has been initiated, and if all goes well, patient’s heart, lungs, liver, kidneys and other organs would be utilised for donation, said representative of organ donation society, Dr Rakesh Bhargava.

Though the medical team does everything possible to save the patient's life, sometimes the injuries are too severe and the patient dies. In this particular case, the patient was admitted to Hamidia hospital after being injured on the BRTS corridor. She was hit on the head when getting off a bus, said Jagdish Chhawani, brother-in-law of the victim.

The injured woman was rushed to Hamidia hospital on January 23. “Her condition did not improve. CT-scan was also ruled out,” said GMC consultant, Dr S S Pal. Two days on, on Saturday with no recovery in sight, the patient’s aunt initiated the move to convince the family to opt for cadaveric organ donation. “Her 10-year-old son agreed to the decision,” said Chhawani who is an advocate by profession. “Patient has been declared brain-dead,” he added.

Formal announcement of brain death takes place after state government appointed team performs a series of tests to determine if brain death has occurred. A patient who is brain-dead has no brain activity and can’t breathe on his/her own. Brain death is death and it is irreversible. Someone who is brain-dead, can’t recover,” explained Bhargava.

Last year on Republic Day, in a first, family of a cadaveric organ donor was felicitated by Madhya Pradesh government. Parents of the deceased received a trophy, certificate of appreciation and many nominations for gallantry and bravery awards. In the last four years, more than 48 organ donations have taken place in the state capital. About two-third were cadaveric organ donations from Bhopal and two donations were from Indore and Jabalpur.
